New AFT member benefit helps simplify student debt

Summer: Simplifying student debt
You no longer have to manage your student loans alone …

We hear about it all the time in our student debt clinics: Our members who are struggling to pay off their student loan debt simply don’t know who to turn to for help. Student loan servicers like Navient have given them bad information, fly-by-night companies are scamming borrowers out of hundreds of dollars to fill out a few forms, and public officials are in no hurry to hold loan servicers or third-party scams accountable.

Primary Election Scorecard

I’m so proud of our WV teachers and service personnel! Last night, we saw the continued results of increased political activism of education employees and the labor movement. We had some amazing victories, including electing a fellow teacher who defeated Senate President Mitch Carmichael. AFT-WV’s endorsed candidates won in 87%  of their primary races. Now we must all come together and work to ensure the candidates who support working families are elected in November. Together, we can create a better future for our profession and our children! - Fred Albert, AFT-WV President

Guidance Document: “Plan to Safely Reopen America’s Schools and Communities”

People across the United States are eager to return to some semblance of “normal.” To do so, we must meet a herculean challenge: remaking our society and the places in our lives we hold dear—public schools and colleges, places of worship, workplaces, restaurants and more—in ways that hold paramount our ultimate priorities: the safety and well-being of our children, families and communities; the safety of our members and every frontline worker; and the health of our economy and economic well-being of working families.

Important message regarding reporting requirements

AFT-WV has become aware of some county school systems attempting to require employees to report daily to the buildings, when these same employees have not been required to do so during this crisis.  The guidance from the WVDE has not changed, and the Governor’s stay-at-home order has not been lifted.  Educators are still directed to work from home and provide instruction remotely to students.

AFT-WV rescinds endorsement

Today, AFT-WV took action to rescind the endorsement of John Hutchinson for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, Division 3 seat.  This decision was in response to Justice Hutchinson's recent decision to choose the special interests of corporations and union busters over WV working families and union labor
