Planning periods enhanced under new legislation

Thanks to provisions of HB 2711, teachers now have increased control regarding their planning periods and additional faculty senate days.

Under the new law:

  • Planning periods cannot be “taken” from educators.
  • Educators shall receive uninterrupted time for planning periods each day.
  • Administrators may not require a teacher to use the planning period time allotted to complete duties beyond instructional planning, including but not limited to, administrative tasks and meetings.

Additionally, faculty senate days increase from four to six each year, with added flexibility in scheduling those days.

*School day is defined as "The time, inclusive of the instructional day, homeroom, class changes, breaks/recess, lunch, and other non-instructional activities from the first designated assembling of the student body in groups (homeroom or first period) to the dismissal of the student body."   (WV Board of Education Policy 2510)

If your planning period occurs before or after the school day, please contact your AFT-WV Staff Representative immediately at 1-800-222-9838.

Share this information with your colleagues by printing AFT-WV's Planning Period Rights flyer and posting in the faculty lounge.
