Take our survey: Proposed changes to special ed policy

WV Board of Education Policy 2419 relates to the Regulations for the Education of Students with Exceptionalities. Changes have been proposed and the policy is on a 60 day public comment period.

AFT-WV has identified two proposed changes which could significantly impact your classroom.

• The policy mandates a 50% cap on the percentage of students with IEPs in a regular education core academic classroom with or without support from a special educator.
• The policy increases the maximum number of Level I special education students per instructional period in grades K-5 in a resource room from 6 to 8 students.

It is important for teachers and service personnel to comment on the proposed changes and how the changes will affect classrooms and students.

The WV BOE comment period ends June 12, 2017.
