Delegates from across the state came to Charleston for the 2011 AFT-WV Convention, held Nov. 10-12, 2011. The event featured presentations and workshops on the hottest educational topics as well as the official chartering of two new AFT-WV locals in Morgan and Roane counties.
The 2012 AFT-West Virginia Summer School was held July 2-6, 2012 at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, WV. Over 150 participants braved the after effects of the big storm and subsequent mass power outage to attend the week-long event. Classes were held on various tips including Technology in Teaching, Managing Anti-Social Behavior, Thinking Math & the Common Core, Leadership Skills and more. The evenings held many enjoyable social activities for participants and offered a great opportunity for members to network woith colleagues from across the state.
Twenty-six delegates from AFT-wv attended the 2012 AFT Convention, held at the Cobo Center in Detroit, MI. Highlights of the convention including a panel on Reconnecting McDowell, a visit from Vice-President Joe Biden and the re-election of Randi Weingarten as AFT president.
The 2012 Legislative Retreat was held Aug. 17-18, 2012 in Charleston. Members from across the state discussed and determined the union's legislative priorities for the 2013 legislative session.
AFT-WV leaders and activists from across the state traveled to Ravenswood on Thursday, August 23, 2012 to rally in support of striking workers at Constellium. A large crowd was on hand from many other unions in the AFL-CIO as well. Many unions donated money to the United Steelworkers Local #5668 strike fund to help the struggling families affected by the strike. AFT-WV proudly donated $5000 to the union brothers and sisters on strike from Constellium. Many thanks to all members who attended to rally, especially our beloved AFT-WV "Road Dawgs" from north central WV, who can always be counted on to support their fellow union members.
