Fred Albert elected as AFT-WV President

During the union’s Constitutional Convention held in Charleston, longtime AFT-Kanawha leader Fred Albert was elected president of AFT-West Virginia.

A 29-year veteran of the profession, Albert taught math at DuPont Middle School in Kanawha County before being elected president of the union.

He is a highly decorated educator, earning numerous accolades over the years.  He was named the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Middle School Math Teacher of the Year for 2018, Kanawha County Teacher of the Year for 2016 and was one of the six finalists for the state Teacher of the Year Award in the same year.

Over the past two decades, he has served the union in many capacities, including 20 years on AFT-WV’s Executive Board as a member-at-large and two terms as state treasurer. Locally, he has served as an Executive Board member-at large, secretary, vice president, and is currently president.  He has been president of AFT-Kanawha for 15 years.

“I’m humbled and honored to be elected as the president of AFT-West Virginia,” remarked Albert, after AFT-WV delegates approved him as their leader. “I am energized by the faith our members have bestowed in me and I am 100% committed to fighting for our union’s mission of improving the lives of education and state employees and the students we serve.”
