During the State of the State address, Governor Jim Justice proposed changing current law to allow school employees to accrue sick leave with a value-added component.

The proposal would affect employees hired after specific dates that ceased the practice of accruing days to convert to PEIA premiums or retirement service credit upon an employee's retirement. Click here for a fact sheet on the current accrual practices.

AFT-WV supports the Governor's concept of reinstating value to accrued sick leave, but no bill has been introduced yet.

The 2019 AFT-WV Professional Issues Conference will be held at The Blennerhassett Hotel, 320 Market Street, Parkersburg, WV on April 5-6, 2019. 

The theme is “Building Better…” and we will have breakouts and plenary sessions, including special guests, activities and presentations, centered around this theme.  We hope you can join us for this very special conference.

The 2019 AFT-WV Legislative Summit will be held on September 6-7, 2019 at Canaan Valley Resort State Park at 230 Main Lodge Road in Davis, WV.  

To ensure all locals are represented, the AFT-WV Executive Board, Local Presidents or their designees, and AFT-WV Advisory Committee members will be given preference.   All other members will receive an email at a later date to verify confirmation of their registration.

AFT-WV will cover costs for lodging and provided meals for confirmed registrants.  Locals/members with outstanding invoices for prior events must be in good standing in order to register

UNION REACTS TO GOVERNOR’S PROCLAMATION

CHARLESTON –AFT-West Virginia President Fred Albert lauded Governor Jim Justice’s Proclamation to declare September 20th as School Service Personnel Day in West Virginia and released the following statement:

Charter School Policy on 60-day public comment

As required by law, the West Virginia Board of Education has promulgated rules for the implementation of the charter school provisions of the omnibus education bill passed in June. The proposed policy is out on a 60-day public comment, rather than a 30-day comment period thanks to a motion by WV BOE member Debra Sullivan.

Members are strongly encouraged to review and comment on the proposed policy. Additionally, AFT-West Virginia has announced its intention to file a lawsuit on the constitutionality of the charter school provision of the law.
