Dates for the 2017 PEIA Public Hearings have been scheduled as follows:

  • November 6, 2017 - Morgantown
  • November 14, 2017- Beckley
  • November 15, 2017- Charleston

Times and locations have not been announced yet. AFT-WV will update this page as soon as the information is made public. 

There will also be 2 virtual (online) public hearings as well. The times/dates on the virtual hearings have not been announced yet. 

Additionally, AFT-WV will post comments about next year's PEIA Fiscal Plan, once it is released.

AFT-WV’s 22nd annual Summer School hosted a record number of attendees who devoted a week to sharpening their professional skills and learning to advocate for public education and working families. Over 200 members attended this year’s event.

The week-long summer program was held June 19-23 at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, WV and allowed participants to earn three hours of graduate credit from WVU. The event is held in cooperation with the Institute for Labor Studies and Research at WVU and the Union Leadership Institute of AFT.

Thanks to provisions of HB 2711, teachers now have increased control regarding their planning periods and additional faculty senate days.

Under the new law:

  • Planning periods cannot be “taken” from educators.
  • Educators shall receive uninterrupted time for planning periods each day. 
  • Administrators may not require a teacher to use the planning period time allotted to complete duties beyond instructional planning, including but not limited to, administrative tasks and meetings.

Additionally, faculty senate days increase from four to six each year, with added flexibility in scheduling those days.

AFT-WV conducted its annual Legislative Summit on August 25-26, 2017 at Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke, WV. 

Members from across the state came together to discuss and determine the legislative priorities of AFT-WV. The group also strategized about ways to engage and mobilize members during the 2018 legislative session.

The priorities on the group will be presented to delegates during the 2017 AFT-WV Constitutional Convention, scheduled for November 2-4, 2017.

WV Board of Education Policy 2419 relates to the Regulations for the Education of Students with Exceptionalities. Changes have been proposed and the policy is on a 60 day public comment period. 

AFT-WV has identified two proposed changes which could significantly impact your classroom. 

• The policy mandates a 50% cap on the percentage of students with IEPs in a regular education core academic classroom with or without support from a special educator.
• The policy increases the maximum number of Level I special education students per instructional period in grades K-5 in a resource room from 6 to
