2013 AFT-WV Convention inspires members to reclaim public education

The 2013 AFT-WV convention, held at the Waterfront Hotel, radiated an energy that inspired participants to return to their schools and reclaim public education.

Convention delegates listened to informative presentations, attended top-notch professional workshops and also approved the 2014 Legislative Agenda. Delegates also heard a recap of the past year’s victories and challenges during Christine Campbell’s State of the Union speech.

The Apple Award for making a Difference was given to AFT- Fayette President Christy Gill and AFT-McDowell President Greg Cruey. The Lifetime Service Award was given to Jeanne DeVincent from Monongalia County. The Albert “Al” Shanker Award for Courage and Conviction was presented to AFT-Marion President and state AFT Vice-President Stacey Strawderman. AFT-Jackson took home top honors in the membership growth awards.

Our union celebrated continued membership growth during the convention with the official chartering of three new AFT locals from Clay, Greenbrier and Jefferson counties. During Friday evening’s banquet, AFT President Randi Weingarten traveled to WV to welcome the new members into the AFT family and presented them with their local banner.  The celebration continued long into the evening with delegates enjoying karaoke and dancing with their colleagues.

"I’ve been ready to charter a local since I became active. I’m so excited to be here and to start working for positive change in my county. This is a big moment for Clay County teachers,” said AFT-Clay President Amanda Shelton.
