Union Action Call

As our locals hold informational meetings to disseminate accurate information and focus the anger and frustration of employees, remember that each of our locals is autonomous and coordination is encouraged.

Some locals have already held local meetings and have activities scheduled. Other locals have meetings scheduled in the upcoming days. AFT-WV and WVEA are working together to assist locals with their meetings, the actions they decide to undertake and to provide accurate information.

While those meetings are going on, WVEA and AFT-WV have additional activities scheduled for locals throughout the state.

--Saturday Town Hall meetings are being scheduled for February 3 and February 10. On those weekends, locals will be holding events at home and inviting their local legislators to attend.

--There will be a statewide Day of Action on Saturday, February 17 at the Capitol. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar; additional information will follow.

--Beginning next week, AFT-WV and WVEA will be calling on educators from counties surrounding the Capitol to come and lobby their legislators after school. Those meetings are being coordinated by WVEA and AFT-WV through February 9th.

In the next few days, we expect to have specific legislation as the vehicle to address the PEIA and salary issues. Once introduced, we will ask all education employees to contact their legislators to support that legislation and keep it moving through the legislative process.

Additionally, everyone is being asked to contact each of their legislators and express their concerns with PEIA, salary, vouchers/ESA’s/charter schools and the elimination of seniority in layoff and transfer.

It is imperative that education employees across the state be engaged, have accurate information and work together to make their voices heard. It is only through this unity and solidarity that we will achieve our desired results.

Meeting with the Governor’s office

On Friday, leaders of AFT-WV and WVEA met with representatives from the Governor’s office to specifically address the issues of salary, PEIA (including Go365) and seniority. The discussions are ongoing and another meeting is scheduled early next week.
