2014 State of the State: AFT-WV weighs in

Christine Campbell, president of AFT-WV, commended Governor Earl Ray Tomblin’s commitment to public education after tonight’s State of the State address in Charleston.
The Governor’s proposals for higher expectations and accountability, a focus on career and technical education, and a salary increase for educators are opportunities to improve public education in West Virginia.
Tomblin proposed increased expectations from students and parents. He also suggested the implementation of an accreditation system to create more transparency for parents and the public to assess the progress in WV schools.
“The Governor’s call for increased expectations and accountability from all stakeholders will help foster an environment where education is valued and student achievement will increase,” remarked Campbell.
Proposals to help students identify academic and career pathways earlier in their school career pleased the union.
“The emphasis on career and technical education will prepare WV students for good paying, highly-skilled technical jobs of today and the exciting economic opportunities on the horizon in our state,” explained Campbell.
AFT-WV praised the resources committed to education during lean economic times.
“Despite a tight budget year, Governor Tomblin has committed substantial resources, including a salary increase, to our education system to help attract and retain highly qualified teachers,” said Campbell, “Our governor understands the future of West Virginia depends on a high quality school system that includes all stakeholders; teachers, parents, students and the community.
