AFT Addresses PEIA Issue in Fayette

On or about January 6, 2017, PEIA began sending out letters to Fayette County employees regarding cancellation and suspension of PEIA coverage.  On January 13, 2017, AFT-WV was informed of this letter and contacted the Fayette County Board of Education.  Fayette County Board of Education told us to disregard the letter as the issue had been corrected and they distributed an email to school employees to do the same.  Unfortunately, PEIA had continued the process of disenrollment of school employees in Fayette County and many school employees’ PEIA coverage was suspended.  On January 17, 2017, AFT-WV reached out to PEIA in an effort to address the issue and request guidance for our members and other school employees.  AFT-WV then worked with the Fayette County Board of Education to distribute information and guidance to Fayette County school employees.

Guidance:  PEIA is currently in the process of re-enrolling all Fayette County school employees.  AFT-WV recommends that you call PEIA at 1-888-680-7342 to verify your current PEIA status.  In the event that your PEIA status is still inactive, please contact Peggy Mullins from the Fayette County Board of Education at 304-574-1176, Ext. 2126.  If you are an AFT member and have an emergency or time-sensitive issue (such as a doctor’s appointment or prescription), please contact AFT-WV at 304-344-2679 and we will expedite your re-enrollment in PEIA.

In the event you are required to submit a claim for reimbursement to PEIA, AFT-WV strongly recommends you save all medical bills and accompanying documentation, especially if you were forced to privately pay during this lack of coverage.

AFT-WV requests your support on February 6, 2017 in asking the Fayette County Board of Education to agree to reimburse school employees for any additional expenses employees incur as a direct result of the suspension of PEIA coverage.
