AFT has two scholarship programs available to help members and their children achieve their educational dreams.

  • The AFT Robert G. Porter Scholars Program offers four 4-year, $8,000 post-secondary scholarships to students who are dependents of AFT members, as well as 10 one-time $1,000 grants to AFT members to assist with their continuing education. The 2023 Porter Scholars application period is open, and the deadline is March 31, 2023. For more details and eligibility requirements for the Porter Scholarship Program, click here.

Did you know that every active, working member of our union has $36,250 in accidental death and dismembersment insurance coverage—provided by your union at no cost!

As one of the valuable benefits of AFT membership, AFT and AFT-WV locals pay for this coverage for ALL eligible members of the AFT. Retired members are not eligible for this benefit.

New members are eligible for $5,000 in free life insurance for one year. This is only availible to new members and must be activated by completing a form within your first 12 months of membership. After the first year this policy is very affordable. 

Keep in mind you can add to the policy and increase its value to more than $5,000. Additionally, all AFT-WV members have a $36,250 accidental death and dismemberment policy at no additional cost.  The Union Plus Free College Benefit offers working families an accessible, debt-free and   convenient higher education opportunity. Members and their families can earn an associate degree online with Eastern Gateway Community College. A last-dollar scholarship covers the difference between any Federal grants and your tuition, fees and e-books at EGCC. Eastern Gateway Community College is a public, non-profit school in the University

Trauma Coverage for AFT members

Insurance Discounts for AFT-WV members
