AFT Response to Governor's Proposal

UNION PRESIDENT RESPONDS TO GOVERNOR’S PROPOSAL

The following is a statement from AFT- West Virginia President Christine Campbell regarding Governor Jim Justice’s press conference this morning:

A month before the November election, Governor Jim Justice held a press conference promising a 5% pay increase for teachers, service personnel and state employees during the next legislative session and pledged to set aside $100 million for PEIA.

It’s insulting to the teachers and service personnel who courageously went on strike over stagnant wages, increasing healthcare costs and attacks on their rights for Governor Justice to demean their action, degrade their intelligence with political promises and give credit to Republicans for doing something they were forced to do.

Teachers, service personnel and state employees can’t trust promises about things the Governor says he’ll do months from now. The Senate leadership extended the strike by opposing the Governor’s 5% offer last session; why should we trust them now?

Teachers, service personnel and state employees deserve more than grandstanding and political smokescreens. They deserve elected officials who will work for real solutions for West Virginia’s working families.
