The leader of AFT-West Virginia, representing teachers, service personnel and state employees, responded to statements made by Governor Jim Justice at a press conference on Thursday.
The Governor provided no new information during his press conference, only reiterated his call to freeze changes to PEIA. The discussion has been ongoing, but we’ve yet to see the details or a long-term plan.
"A freeze is not a fix. While we’re glad our elected leaders are focusing on PEIA and listening to our concerns, the dedicated employees of West Virginia deserve real solutions. PEIA is not fixed until the Governor and legislative leaders identify a dedicated, sustainable funding stream for the plan. “Promises won’t pay the bills," explained AFT-WV President Christine Campbell.
Governor Justice stated at the press conference that “he’s fixed PEIA for 17 months.”
AFT-WV and our WVEA colleagues have yet to see a detailed plan, and we know employees want to see a written proposal and action from the PEIA finance board.
Meanwhile, the Governor only referenced the legislative process regarding the issue of low pay, which is connected to our members' concerns about the financial health of their families as well as the hundreds of teacher vacancies that are shortchanging our children.
