Mon Co. Board of Education Settles Suit with AFT

MORGANTOWN -- The Monongalia County Board of Education recently paid $3,893.89 in a settlement with the American Federation of Teachers. The two groups settled after the A.F.T. said the board violated open meetings laws by failing to inform the public back in October.

We felt it was important to challenge that and make sure everything they're going to discuss is on the agenda because that gives us an opportunity then to make our voices heard for or against something in this county," said Frank Caputo, of the American Federation of Teachers.

In that meeting, the School board said that it would vote to reduce dental benefits for teachers and service personnel.

It claims the board also violates the laws by issuing different agendas to its members than to the public.

The school board addressed the issue at a board of education at Tuesday's meeting.

"It's good for us now that we have a better understanding now that our stuff is on a electronic format we have a lot of things that are available to our personnel through the electronic format in the email," said Frank Devono, Monongalia County superintendent.

Board member said it has met with the state ethics commission to get a better understanding of the law.
