Tell us about your job.
I teach middle school math at Monongah Middle School in Marion County.
How long have you been working in education?
I have been teaching for 15 years.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is when the kids understand something and you can see it in their faces.
How did you become involved or why did you join the union?
I became active in the union because I taught with Frank Caputo and he was active and made me see how important it is.
Describe any roles have you had in the union...in your school, your local or in the state.
I have been local president in Marion County since we chartered in 2003. I am also building rep at my school and on the state executive board.
Any other committees, boards or activities within education?
I have represented the local union on many committees at the county level throughout the years, from recommending a superintendent to the calendar committee. I currently represent AFT Marion County on the Professional Advisory Committee. I am faculty senate treasurer at my school and also on the finance committee.
Describe a rewarding experience that you have had through your involvement in the union.
One of the most rewarding experiences is getting a board of education majority elected that actually will listen to the concerns of teachers.
Are you involved in any other community or civic groups?
I attend South Ridge Church. I am active in the Marion County Central Labor Council and the Democratic Women.
What hobbies and interests do you enjoy in your leisure time?
I like to spend time with my family - my three children, their spouses and my two beautiful grandsons! I also like to camp, fish, read and follow the Mountaineers and Steelers!
What is your favorite book or quote?
My favorite quote involves education and the focus we're putting on assessment..."We are spending so much time weighing the baby, we're forgetting to feed it."
