Classroom supplies aren’t the only thing you need to prepare for the upcoming school year. Making sure your AFT membership is in order should be at the top of the list!

In West Virginia, school employees do not have collective bargaining rights.  Your rights can change or be completely eliminated during a legislative session.  AFT-WV monitors policies and lobbies at the legislature on behalf of all school employees.  The number of members we have and member activism is what gives us strength, and the strength of our union is what gives us the power to protect your rights, and advocate for the profession and public education.

During the union’s Constitutional Convention held in Charleston, longtime AFT-Kanawha leader Fred Albert was elected president of AFT-West Virginia.

A 29-year veteran of the profession, Albert taught math at DuPont Middle School in Kanawha County before being elected president of the union.

He is a highly decorated educator, earning numerous accolades over the years.  He was named the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Middle School Math Teacher of the Year for 2018, Kanawha County Teacher of the Year for 2016 and was one of the six finalists for the state Teacher of the Year

Grant Prillaman, an AFT member and Spanish teacher at Washington High School in Jefferson County, traveled to Puerto Rico to volunteer in the ongoing recovery efforts of the island. 

More than a year after Hurricane Maria, there is still much to do. However, the AFT is helping provide resources for families, children and schools in numerous communities.

Prillaman traveled from West Virginia to Puerto Rico to work with Operation Agua, a partnership between Operation Blessing International and the AFT.

Summary of PEIA Plan Proposal for FY 2020

(July 2019 – June 2020)

The PEIA Finance Board has released its Proposed Plan for the next fiscal year. Below is a synopsis of the plan. While plan changes appear minimal, AFT-WV is analyzing these proposals and will address any concerns at the public hearings.


  • Third Party Administrator Change
  • UMR, a UnitedHealthcare company, is the new TPA
  • Effective 7/1/19 for all our active and pre-65 populations
  • UMR is the nation’s largest TPA with 2,800 customers and 4.5M members
  • Currently UMR serves 559 state and public sector customers
  • PEIA is UMR’s largest customer

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Events and

Legislative Lobby Day


Please join us Monday, January 21, 2019 as we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and continue the activism of 55 Strong!

We have several activities planned for the day and we hope you can join us for them. Parking is available nearby the church at Laidley Field.

Immediately following the program, we will march to the Capitol for the ringing of the Liberty Bell at the State Capitol.

During the State of the State address, Governor Jim Justice proposed changing current law to allow school employees to accrue sick leave with a value-added component.

The proposal would affect employees hired after specific dates that ceased the practice of accruing days to convert to PEIA premiums or retirement service credit upon an employee's retirement. Click here for a fact sheet on the current accrual practices.

AFT-WV supports the Governor's concept of reinstating value to accrued sick leave, but no bill has been introduced yet.
